A Snapshot Into Our Culture

As Seth Godin once said, “you can either choose to maximize profits or have a good culture — but you can’t do both.” The traditional thinking is that a good culture is going to cost you money, so the owner has to decide: Am I in it to make the most money or provide a good place to work?

It’s clearly a mixed message. “We do certain things for employees but the bottom line is we’re really trying to maximize profits.” The question then becomes: What is an acceptable profit margin and does that allow me to be the company I want to be? And the answer is: You can’t do that by watching every dime and punishing people for little mistakes.

It’s definitely a fine line to walk, but at UCEC, we always strive to deliver the best of both worlds. We make no bones about being a for-profit company, but at the same time, our people have always been our most valuable asset. The only way to prove that’s true and not some empty corporate talking point is by living it out every day. And we do. We celebrate and elevate our employees every chance we get. The end result is: you get the best possible outcomes when working with UCEC. And happy customers equal happy employees.

That’s a win-win in our book. And it’s something we’ll continue to build our culture upon moving forward.
